Websites can cost from virtually nothing, to many many thousands. They are your company’s shop window in the information super highway. Millions are spent by high street stores researching and building the best shop fronts, yet the vast majority have done no form of keyword analysis research to determine what will give them better search engine ranks. Why is it that the humble website is so often overlooked as the powerful sales tool that it sure is, or could be. How do you get the best Return On Investment (ROI) on your website?

No matter what the investment, you will get no ROI without one thing: a return. Unless your website is earning you money, which means increasing your sales, there can be no website ROI. And if your customers don’t know your website exists, there can be no sales, so there can be no website ROI. The good news is that with the right search engine optimization company, it is easy to improve search engine ranking, and soon get better website ROI.

Depending on your business model, timescales and budget, it is often best to take a 2 pronged approach: Start by finding a good Pay Per Click firm offering a comprehensive Pay Per Click advertising package and take their Pay Per Click management service. This is the only legitimate and ethical way to get yourself on the first page of the search engines, same day. With the right Pay Per Click firm, this alone could produce better website ROI. However care must be taken to accurately track your leads and conversions from your Pay Per Click advertising, to ensure that you are making money on the advertising spend. Basically that your profit per customer is higher than the cost per conversion.

It’s worth pointing out though, that this calculation should be performed on the lifetime value of customers, not the profit per initial sale. If it’s right for your business, it is indeed a valid marketing strategy to lose money on the initial sale, in order to profit from pipeline sales. Super markets do this all the time, it’s called a Loss Leader.

The second prong is to engage a Search Engine Optimization Company, to work on better search engine rankings for your website. It may be that this Search Engine Optimization Company is the same as the Pay Per Click Firm in stage one. The one thing that you must start with is a proper targeted keyword analysis research. Don’t be proud and arrogant enough to think you can skip this step, because you think you know your business, your market and your customers. You can’t beat getting a professional job done of keyword analysis research, it is absolutely the most fundamental step you must take to getting better website ROI.

Once your top 5 key phrases have been agreed with your search engine optimization consultant, they will start the marathon of getting you better website ROI from improved search engine ranking. Expect this to take time, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will your dominance of your market place.

One last word, bear in mind that your online competition is not necessarily the same as your real life, bricks and mortar competition. In simple terms, your online marketing competition is anyone that ranks above you for your keyword analysis researched search terms. The nice part is, that the higher your search engine placement, the better the website ROI gets.

It’s not sufficient to have links directing to your website, but you require having your keyword anchor linked to your website. High Page Rank Domains

Search engine marketing and SEO can be hard to master, especially when the technology is always growing and changing. If you have mastered SEO, you could still make some little mistakes. If ranking well organically is important to you, there are a few common mistakes to avoid.

Here are 4 common problems and mistakes made during search engine optimization:

1. Stopping your SEO efforts

It is important to continue optimization even when your site has a high ranking. Every day people are adding new websites using SEO and this can move you out of the high ranking positions if you are inconsistent.

2. Failing to recognize the importance of content

SEO is not only about tagging the right words; you also need interesting and fresh content. Your content should not consist of only keywords without telling the visitors any information. If your content is not interesting, ranking high with search engines will not be beneficial. Visitors like to see content that is not just keywords covering the site with no meaning.

3. Reusing Meta tags and/or Titles for your web pages

Just like people, every page is unique and should have the appropriate Title and Meta tag. Using the same Meta descriptions and Titles will make it harder to optimize the page because the content will not match the description.

4. Substituting a splash page for your home page

Home pages should be interesting to visitors as well as work with SEO purposes. Since the home page is so essential to your website, splash pages should be avoided. If you still want something interesting on the home page, using a flash banner can be an excellent alternative.

Doing a great job with SEO marketing can spell the difference between a flourishing website and a complete disaster. Remembering these tips will make your SEO experience easier and more effective.

Google is the ‘Big Daddy’ if all the search engines and owns around 60% of the market share. If you can keep Google happy with your off-page SEO, you can pretty much keep other search engines like Yahoo! and MSN happy as well. Bear in mind though that Google ranks sites that use ethical off-page SEO factors higher than those that don’t.

Probably 75% to 80% of your targeted traffic comes from the various search engines. With the use of off-page and on-page SEO techniques you can position your website higher in the Search Engine Results Pages or SERPs. Once your website is ready and ‘live’ it’s time to start using some of the off-page SEO techniques below to begin building it’s authority.

  1. Link Building - One of the most important factors of off-page SEO. Building authority links to your websites increases your link popularity. Link popularity is simply the number of back links that your site has. You can use the free external links tool in Google’s Webmaster Tools to check which pages on your site have links pointing to them from other sites. Remember, higher link popularity = higher authority and visibility in the search engines. Reciprocal links have been de-valued by Google. So, one of the best ways to build links is by ensuring that your site’s content is not just original but also informative. This is the #1 strategy that in itself invites other webmasters to link to your website.
  2. Article marketing - Quite literally, the Internet is overflowing with article directories. However, you must consider only those article directories that have good authority and can help you to generate targeted traffic. When you submit an article, you’ll be given a ‘resource box’, which you must use to introduce yourself, your company, and share your site’s URL. Since many of these article websites have a high authority, links from these sites would pave the way to increasing your own website’s authority as well. Many of these article websites also allow other webmasters to take a copy of your article for use on their own website, as long as your resource box remains unchanged.
  3. Press Releases - Similar to article marketing, press release marketing involves adding your press release to press release directories which have good search engine authority. Again you can add links to a resource box, and in some cases you can embed links within your release. Press releases also have the added benefit that if your release is newsworthy enough it could also end up being printed in off-line media such as newspapers and magazines too.
  4. Forum marketing - Forums are on-line community spaces dedicated to a particular subject of interest. Find some good, reputable forums dedicated to your website’s subject and join them. As a member, you’ll be able to post messages and reply to other members’ queries. Quite often you will also have a signature box that shows up in each of your posts. Use this signature box to advertise your website and paste its link. Posting significant messages with your website URL will help you in increasing the link popularity for your website.
  5. Advertise at Craigslist and if your audience is UK based, Gumtree - Both are on-line classified websites and present a novel way to enhance your link popularity. Both are very popular websites with a high authority! Having links from these classified ads websites could give you a boost. All you need to do is post your own ad under the right category. Easy, right!

Follow these off-page SEO factors as part of your search marketing strategy and watch your website climb the rankings.

You know how to do a search, type in a word and wait for a list of mainly useless information. Only a few of the pages in a long list will contain what you are looking for. This of course takes time and you have to visit the site to find out if the content is relevant to what you are looking for.

Most search engines have an advanced system to search for information.
Searches are useful in that you can add a word or words to the search and those words are listed somewhere on the page that is then listed. An example of this could be Search + huts

This would do a search for pages containing both search and huts. Hopefully it should list my site near or at the top of the list!
Searches too are useful in that some words have two or more meanings so you exclude those from the search. An example of this could be music - soul. This would do a search for music which does not contain soul.
OR retrieves pages that includes either word A or word B, uppercase OR between words, an example of this could be music rock OR classical

link: Some search engines if you put link:www.searchhuts.co.uk will search their pages to see who is linking to you have a go try it! See who is linking to your site.

text: Finds pages that contain specified text in any part of the page other than an image tag, link, or URL. The search text:searchhuts would find all pages with the term searchhuts in them.

title: Finds pages that contain the specified word or phrase in the page title (which appears in the title bar of most browsers).
The search title: search would find pages with search in the title.

url: Finds pages with a specific word or phrase in the URL. Use url:searchhuts to find all pages on all servers that have the word searchhuts in the host name, path, or filename - the complete URL, in other words.
Try it out!

If you dig a little into the on-line marketing world, you will discover a golden well of hype and information about SEO. If you are just starting out on this road, you might be inclined to display a large amount of enthusiasm and decide you definitely want in on this interesting yet challenging exercise - even if its only for a single website. After you make this decision, the logical next step is to ponder on where to start.

The first step is research. One of the best things about SEO is that you never stop learning what works and what doesn’t and how to tweak things to work on different websites. The internet is your best friend and worst enemy on this matter - there so much information out there. If you can’t spend much time doing all of the research you need to, there are many, many tools to help you get started and to keep track of what is going on in your niche or with your website.

Again, the internet can be your best friend or worst enemy on this matter. Looking for tools can be time consuming in that you have to find the right ones for you, the ones that are legitimate and the ones with the good reputations. For starting out you will be able to find keyword research tools, meta tag generators (although it would probably be better if you generated these yourself especially if you have a small site), tools that work out the size of your pages (too big and Google won’t like them, neither will your visitors) and of course there are blogs and tutorials to help you.

Some examples of “getting started” SEO tools are:

WordTracker - general keyword research tool, one of the best known in the SEO industry. You have to pay for the service but there is a free trial.

Google AdWords keyword tool - Free keyword research tool, specify keywords or enter your URL for keyword performance data.

Meta tag generator tool - Free tool to help you make sure your keyword and description meta tags are formed correctly

Page size tool - Free tool to help you determine the size of your web page

Web developers cheat sheet - PDF file on SEOmoz containing SEO friendly tips and hints for the coding of your site.

XML sitemap creation tool - Free creation of a site map in XML format to help the search engines index your site after it has been created and launched.

Robots.txt creation tool - Free creation of a file that tells the search engines if there are any folders or pages you want to be excluded from indexing

Code validators - Free tools that will inform you of any CSS, HTML or linking errors on your site.

There is a wide range of SEO tools out there, not only to help you when you are building new sites but to “spy” on competitors and track your site performance as well. Analytics tools or competitive research tools are a dime a dozen, you can search for them now if you like but we will be giving a list of such tools in the next few days.

What are your favourite tools to help you get started on the SEO of a new website?

Another very important part of SEO is, of course, monitoring and analysing your websites’ performance on an ongoing basis. Lucky for the readers of this post, Interleado itself offers such an SEO analysis tool, complete with a free trial. If there are any questions regarding the software, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Search Engines can be a digital netherworld - complex, mysterious, and protected. But like in the movie, The Matrix, no system is failsafe. Breaking the “code” of the search engines will reap great rewards. Here are three keys to the kingdom:

1. Search Engine Optimization - One of your main goals is to have your site be seen and correctly interpreted by the search engine spiders. This is key if you want your site to be ranked near the top of searches. In order to do so you first need a dense keyword base. Make sure your keywords relate to your site and you pick good phrases and words that people use to search your product or service. You also want your Meta tags (information on the content of your webpage) to be well structured and related to your site. Having your site come up for the wrong searches will not draw attention to your site. Another option for site optimization is to hire a professional to help you rise in the search engine rankings. There are tricks of the trade that informed webmasters know that can save you months of trial and error, and achieve your goals faster. The money spent is a good return on your investment.

2. Search Engine Submission - There are tons of search engines on the web like Google, MSN, Yahoo, and DMOZ that you can submit your site for listings. It is simple, easy and effective. Using Google as an example, go to the Add URL site, then type in your web address, any comments and click “Add URL”. Now your site is being spidered by Google, accessible to net surfers. Keep in mind, the more search engines you submit your site the better the chances for visits on your homepage. A few words caution - watch out for websites claiming to submit your homepage to several thousand search engines. Often times these are scams and only submit your site to fake link pages which could get you banned from the true search engines. You want a search engine that will submit only to the major directories and search engines.

3. Link Popularity - The more visits you get to your site, the higher your search engine ranking will be. One of the best ways to do so is to have a blog and update it at least once a week. Link the blog to your site and vice versa. You can also send articles and press releases to directories like EzineArticles who will publish your work on other sites and return the links back to you. Another good way to attract more traffic would be to join the social web. Sites like Digg, De.licio.us, etc will help promote your site through bookmarking.

One very neglected area that most companies ignore with their websites are the meta tags — the hidden labels for your web pages that only search engines read. By writing and optimizing the meta tags for each of your web pages, you can drive more traffic to your site.

If you don’t write your own title and description meta tags, the search engine will pick up whatever it likes in the content of your pages to describe them. But if you do write your own meta tags, there is a good chance your descriptions will be displayed in the search results.

However, I can’t guarantee that because with search engines no one can guarantee anything.

That being said, I am amazed at how few people know how to tap into the hidden power of the meta tags. I regularly look up the source codes of website pages, and the meta tags are misused, underused, or even non-existent. This means that when someone does a search, the resulting descriptions aren’t as good as they should be.

For example: Look at this search result when I typed in “furniture.”

Furniture, Bedroom Furniture, Dining Room Furniture, Living Room …
Eco-furniture.com offers furniture including bedroom furniture, dining room furniture, living room furniture, outdoor furniture, beds, tables …
www.eco-furniture.com/ -25k - Cached - Similar pages

The unique thing about this store is that its products are green and eco-friendly. Yet that description is not in the headline title. And the description below is simply a laundry list that barely mentions the green benefits of the company.

If you wished to rewrite the meta tags for this company, you would go into the Properties section of the website builder and you would enter something like this in the three boxes available.

TITLE: Green Ecology Furniture

EXPLANATION: Although “Green Ecology Furniture” is not a particularly attractive headline, it does answer the question if someone happens to type in “green” or “ecology” and “furniture.” The title in the meta tag is often different from the title on the actual page. The meta tag title is designed to help the person searching on the Internet. It’s more utilitarian. The title on the page will be designed to draw the reader into the rest of the page.

DESCRIPTION: You can reduce your carbon footprint when furnishing your home with our stylish, contemporary eco-furniture. Our green alternatives for preserving our ecology and furnishing your home include …

EXPLANATION: This is written to show the reader the personal benefit of the product — she will be leaving less of a carbon footprint with her purchase. The sentence trails off implying a call to action so that she will be more likely to click on the link to see just which items the store offers.

KEYWORDS: furniture, green, ecology, green furniture, furnishings, eco

EXPLANATION: The three first or primary keywords are contained in some manner in all three meta tags. Now the keywords I chose in this example were just guesses. In real life, I would do a keyword search using a tracking tool to ensure the best keywords were used for this optimization. Also, note that there are not a lot of keywords. Most sites make the mistake of loading up on 20 to 30 keywords. This simply confuses the search engines and may even lower your rankings.

If the above meta tags were to be implemented, this company’s search results would look something like this when someone typed in “furniture.

Green Ecology Furniture
You can reduce your carbon footprint when furnishing your home with our stylish, contemporary eco-furniture. Our green alternatives for preserving our ecology and furnishing your home include –
www.eco-furniture.com/ - 25k - Cached - Similar - pages

When compared with the original, you can see that the revised title will help readers quickly understand the uniqueness of the company from other furniture stores, and the description will be more compelling to get users to actually click on the link and visit the page.

By writing and optimizing the meta tags well, you help the searcher find what he is looking for. You also “optimize” the prospects clicking on your site by qualifying them.

Last, but not least, by carefully writing your meta tags, the search engines will know exactly what each page is about and your rankings will improve.

When it comes to popular vacation destinations, few places have what it takes to compete with South Lake Tahoe. In the summer, there is boating, swimming, golfing, and hiking, and in the winter, the skiing conditions are top-notch thanks to 360 inches of annual snowfall. There are 182 ski trails amidst 8,800 total ski resort acres, which means there should be plenty of room for the flocks of snow-lovers that make their way to this region every year.

Even travelers looking for less active pursuits will be pleased with South Lake Tahoe; nearby Nevada hosts a number of casinos, there are restaurants galore, and the 274 days of sunshine encourage plenty of relaxation outdoors.

The perfect way to enjoy such a vacationer’s heaven is to sit back and take it all in while benefiting from the ample space and amenities of home. A South Lake Tahoe vacation rental allows for the best parts of being home and being away to exist as one. Traveling to a new location is fun and exciting, but having a place to retreat from the crowd at the day’s end makes for a truly memorable experience.

A popular area for finding refuge from the bustle of South Lake Tahoe is Heavenly Valley. This quiet, forested area is close to such landmarks as the Heavenly Mountain Ski Resort and the Stateline casinos, yet cottages and lodges are sheltered beneath a canopy of pine trees in order to provide a bit of seclusion. Imagine being able to come home from a long day of skiing to your private cabin-style chalet. A few minutes in the hot tub, which sits outside on the wrap-around deck, will certainly ease tender muscles, and a quiet evening spent watching movies and drinking hot cocoa in front of the fireplace will rejuvenate you for whatever tomorrow may hold.

Or, picture a summer vacation with the family. A four bedroom home located near the marina, hiking trails, and a grocery store will ensure that everyone’s diverse needs are met. Instead of being crowded into a hotel room and searching the phone book for a restaurant, you’ll feel free to spread out and cook a leisurely meal in your own, borrowed, kitchen. Parents and kids will be more relaxed with a set-up like this, and you’ll probably wonder why you ever did it another way.

For true water-lovers, the Tahoe Keys is the perfect place to secure a vacation rental. Sweeping views of the lake and the mountains, as well as private docks and outdoor spas make the homes in this area of South Lake Tahoe extra inviting. Proximity to the water is very useful when it comes to filling your days with boating, tubing, and fishing. And, having access to a microwave, television, whirlpool tub, and game room provide all the remaining ingredients to make your evenings a success as well. From this point of view, South Lake Tahoe is an irresistible sight to behold.

Whether you seek a rustic one-bedroom cabin or a modern, spacious condo that will fit all the cousins and grandparents, there is a good chance you’ll find it tucked away somewhere in South Lake Tahoe. After finding the best place to fit your needs, everyone will be able to focus on what really matters, the scenery, the limitless activities, and the feeling of being far away with the people you care about.

HomeAway.com will help you locate the place of your future greatest vacation ever, so visit South Lake Tahoe vacation rentals to get started on your way.

HomeAway.com is a great place to find all the information you need for vacation rentals around the world.

step to get high page rank

On the cover of the April 2008 issue of Condé Nast Portfolio Magazine, is a picture of a woman’s ruby red high heel pitted against and unmistakably underneath the toe of a man’s business shoe. The feature article is titled: “POWER WHO HAS IT. WHO DOESN’T? The surprising news about gender in the office”

This article, written by Harriet Rubin, was such a surprise to me. After all it appears that women have made so much progress. I was beginning to believe that my writing about breaking the glass ceiling was old news. Or am I right on target with this subject?

To me, in my gut, something in the last few years just didn’t feel right. Everyone was trying to tell me “oh no, it’s not a problem anymore, look at all these women in PINK magazine!” Still the issues continue to creep into my conscience mind. I continue to speak to anyone; anywhere I can about women facing the barrier of career success, facing the challenges of breaking the glass ceiling. I continue to write articles discussing that very subtle gender curtain.

Then, vindication! Condé Nast Portfolio Magazine features an article and substantiated evidence that supports what my gut is telling me.

When compared to their male counterparts, women are statistically in worse condition financially than they were in 2005. (The Bureau of Labor Statistics; Catalyst and Condé Nast Portfolio research) In 2006 women earned 78.7 cents for every dollar earned by men which represents a decline from the 79.4 cents on the dollar earned in 2005 and marking only a 5-cent increase since 1991.

Women in the board room have not faired that well either. From 1995 to 2005 there was a steady increase in board membership for women, but in the last three years the numbers are flat. Women only represent 14.8% of corporate board seats in the Fortune 500. Within the same Fortune 500, 234 companies were represented by 3 or more female officers in 2006 and only 64 companies did not have a single female officer. The 2007 stats show an alarming 31 companies dropping below three female officers, down to 203, while 10 companies were added to the list of companies with zero female officers. Female CEOs across the board have also lost ground with 29% representing their companies in 2006 and only 27.2% in 2007.

Since the inception of The U.S. Department of Labor Glass Ceiling Commission in 1991 significant progress in these areas occurred and appeared to be gaining momentum. Since the ’90s the major news catching awareness of this issue appears to have died down, leaving most to believe that the issue has disappeared. This may be the actual reason for the slow down in progress. Less publicity leads to less awareness. When we look at the feature players such as Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi, on the political front, and the CEOs of Avon, EBay and Xerox on the corporate front, everyone in Middle America begins to believe that the issue has disappeared. What remains are men and women in the day to day trenches who face a lack of true leadership. The system is void of the ability to assist both men and women as they attempt to improve their interactions, improve productivity and respect, work in an environment void of the sexism and void of the gender curtain in their path.

Today, I believe that it is a grass roots effort that will solve problems and create progress. It’s what we do in the corporations inside and outside of the Fortune 500, to improve the working relationships, policies and paradigms of all management levels, which will change the landscape over the next ten years. If we continue on the current path, progress will be slow and as our Condé Nast author Harriet Rubin laments, 2081 will be the year that true parity will be achieved.

I for one do not want to wait that long. I believe there are mentors with tools to move us forward today. “A Woman’s Ladder To Success is Paved with Broken Glass Ceilings” is one of those tools. Men and Women can discover the underlying causes for that subtle gender curtain to exist. Once you are aware, then the challenge is to apply this wisdom to your personal career and your company’s future success.

It’s time for an awakening. Women cannot rely on the old school rules to solve the crisis of stagnation. Women need to utilize actual talent and innovation to step away from the crowd and create awareness of their true potential. In the March/April 2008 issue of PINK Magazine, the editors found 15 female innovators within Corporate America. The article is enlightening, pointing to the innovative ideas of the likes of Irene Britt, VP and General Manager for Campbell Soup Co. who took the V-8 product from weak in 2005 to V-8 Fusion in 2007. It’s innovation of this caliber that sets these 15 women apart from the rest of the corporate crowd.

Read PINK Magazine this month, read “A Woman’s Ladder To Success” and combine your talents with your innovative skills and presence and create a new level of success in your career.
